Once you've logged on
Please add number 1 to the start of your Zoom display name (to denote you are a mentor when we're allocating you to breakout rooms) and your preferred pronouns to the end of your Zoom name (because we want to be as inclusive as possible).
For example, 1 - Minnie Mouse (she/her)
If you're not sure how to do this, please help to this help page.
Session format
Each session will commence with a short briefing from our facilitators and an icebreaker exercise in breakout rooms which should last ~15 minutes.
We'll then move onto the main 60 minute mentoring session. Students will paired in breakout rooms with a mentor (that's you!) for 5 minutes before moving onto the next mentor.
You will be automatically moved between breakout rooms by the facilitators, but can drop into the "main" virtual space at any point in the breakout sessions if you need to speak with the session facilitators for any reason.
We'll then have a ~15 minute debrief where we'll ask both mentors and mentees what they've discovered in the last hour.
In order to keep the sessions running to schedule, it is very important to we keep our discussions within the allotted time. You may be cut short if your session over-runs the allotted time.
Conversation guidelines
In order for our event to be recognised as part of the global International Women’s Day movement, we must not use the IWD name or logo to generate commercial gain or sale of products. Your mentoring session isn’t just an advert for your business. Of course, you can refer to what you do in the context of your advice however, you must not give students a 5-minute sales pitch!
Whilst we welcome opinion and encourage you to share your experiences, please avoid any overtly controversial topics including religious and political matters. The International Women’s Day brand must not be used in association with any form of harmful, violent or illegal activity
Avoid using gendered language to describe professions (e.g. “actress” for “actor”), gendered honourifics (“Ms.”, “Mr.”, etc.), and assigning gender to otherwise genderless things wherever possible
We also wish to avoid the collective term “guys” for a group of people. Try to should use gender-neutral collectives such as “folks” or “team” instead
Sample questions
In case of awkward silences we've pulled together a standby list of questions mentors might like to use:
If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?
What do you want to do/be in the future?
What are your talents and strengths?
If you could be paid to do anything, what would you want it to be?
What could we as employers do to help students more?
Would you ever see yourself starting a business?
Do you think you should have the same job for your whole working life?
What do you enjoy doing, in or outside of education?
Do you think the job I do, or the business I own, will still be needed in twenty years?
What would you be looking for when choosing your first, or next, job?
Substitutions
Mentor substitutions are obviously not encouraged - we've picked you for a good reason! However if something changes and you can no longer take part please let us know as soon as possible and ensure that you provide a recommendation for a replacement. The IWD Banbury curators have the final decision on who the replacement should be.
Dress code
There is no dress code for IWD Banbury! We don't believe that you need to be suited and booted to be a brilliant mentor. Wear whatever you feel confident in, whether that's sparkly trainers and jeans or heels and a tailored suit.
Attendance FAQs
Can men attend?
Yes. IWD Banbury is for everyone, regardless of how you identify. We don't believe that gender parity will be possible without having all types of people around the metaphorical table.
Accessibility
Making our events accessible and inclusive to all is really important to us, but we’re honest enough to say it is a work in progress. We’re working hard to make our brand and digital presence as accessible and easy to use as possible too.
If you, or any of your guests, have any access requirements please do let us know.
If you have any suggestions or ideas about how to make our events more accessible please do share them with us. We’re all ears!
Data sharing
Privacy is really important to us at IWD Banbury.
Photos
We will be capturing images during IWD Banbury events. By attending we'll assume given permission to use any photography or video taken on the day. We reserve the right to use any event-related social media posts, quotes or feedback you might give in future material; We'll make sure we credit you wherever possible. Once the images have been edited and uploaded we will make sure you have access to them too. If you plan to use them, please credit the IWD Banbury and the photographer.
You are encouraged to take photos and share your experience online of your wider experience of IWD Banbury, however please do not take photos of the young people during or after the speed mentoring sessions.
Post event
If you make a connection with a young person during your speed mentoring session and would like to stay in touch after the event, please approach the representative of the school/college present in the session before swapping details.
We’ll send you a short survey to find out your thoughts about the event and how we can improve it for future editions.
Sample social media captions
We need your help promoting IWD Banbury. As a first-time event we need to harness your networks to make sure as many people as possible know about it. We know you are busy so feel free to use these sample captions:

#InternationalWomensDay encourages us all to #BreakTheBias by thinking globally and act locally. The Cherwell celebration of International Women’s Day is taking place during March 2022. On Tuesday 8th March I'll be sharing my story to inspire local students as part of their virtual speed mentoring programme. There are lots of free and ticketed arts, community and business activities to get involved in with through March. You can visit https://www.iwdbanbury.com/ to find out more.
Make sure you include #iwdbanbury and #BreakTheBias (the official theme for global IWD activities in 2022).
