Introduction
Thank you for joining us for International Women’s Day Banbury. We’re so pleased to have you on board!
The following guidelines will provide you with important information and instructions.
Session details
The session will be held via Zoom and uses the breakout room function to pair mentors with mentees. Ideally each student will logged on using an individual device (computer, tablet or smartphone) to enable the 1:1 conversations to happen in the breakout room.
We politely ask you to check you can access Zoom in advance of Tuesday 8th in case there any restrictions that may be in place in your organisation, such as firewalls or domain blocking. Any problems please let us know and we can work with your IT support to resolve ahead of IWD.
Each session is planned around 12 mentors and 12 young people. If you have more than 12 learners involved in the session, we can pair or group them when talking to the mentors. Please let your facilitator know final numbers at the start of the session, so they can do the maths during the ice-breaker!
Please log into our Greta Zoom Room no later than 5 minutes before the start of your session using the following credentials:

Once you've logged on
We're asking everyone online to add their preferred pronouns to the end of their Zoom name because we want to be as inclusive as possible.
For example, Minnie Mouse (she/her)
If you're not sure how to do this, please help to this help page.
Session format
Each session will commence with a short briefing from our facilitators and an icebreaker exercise in breakout rooms which should last ~15 minutes.
We'll then move onto the main 60 minute mentoring session. Students will paired in breakout rooms with a mentor for 5 minutes before moving onto the next mentor.
Students will be automatically moved between breakout rooms by the facilitators, but can drop into the "main" virtual space at any point in the breakout sessions if they need to speak with the session facilitators for any reason.
We'll then have a ~15 minute debrief where we'll ask both mentors and mentees what they've discovered in the last hour.
In order to keep the sessions running to schedule, it is very important to we keep our discussions within the allotted time. You may be cut short if your session over-runs the allotted time.
Conversation guidelines
Whilst we welcome opinion and encourage you to share your experiences, please avoid any overtly controversial topics including religious and political matters. The International Women’s Day brand must not be used in association with any form of harmful, violent or illegal activity
Avoid using gendered language to describe professions (e.g. “actress” for “actor”), gendered honourifics (“Ms.”, “Mr.”, etc.), and assigning gender to otherwise genderless things wherever possible
We also wish to avoid the collective term “guys” for a group of people. Try to should use gender-neutral collectives such as “folks” or “team” instead
Sample questions
In case of awkward silences we've pulled together a standby list of questions mentees might like to use. These will be shown at the start of the session.
What do you do?
What does a typical day look like for you?
How did you get to the role you have today?
Would you ever consider changing careers?
Do you have any qualifications?
Do you need any specific qualifications to do your role?
What do you like most about what you do?
What do you like least about what you do?
If you had a year off, what would you like to do?
If you could go back in time to change one thing, what would it be?
Dress code
There is no dress code for IWD Banbury! We don't believe that you need to be suited and booted to be professional. We encourage all participants to whatever they feel confident in, whether that's sparkly trainers and jeans or heels and a tailored suit.
Attendance FAQs
Can men attend?
Yes. IWD Banbury is for everyone, regardless of how you identify. We don't believe that gender parity will be possible without having all types of people around the metaphorical table.
Accessibility
Making our events accessible and inclusive to all is really important to us, but we’re honest enough to say it is a work in progress. We’re working hard to make our brand and digital presence as accessible and easy to use as possible too.
If you, or any of your guests, have any access requirements please do let us know.
If you have any suggestions or ideas about how to make our events more accessible please do share them with us. We’re all ears!
Data sharing
Privacy is really important to us at IWD Banbury.
Post-event
If a young person in your group makes a particular connection with a mentor during your speed mentoring session and would like to stay in touch them after the event (e.g. to arrange work experience or a placement, we ask you as representatives of the school/college present to make these arrangements with the mentor. Again, mentors have already been briefed not to exchange personal information directly, and they will be reminded of this at check in the briefing.
We’ll send you a short survey to find out your thoughts about the event and how we can improve it for future editions.
Sample social media captions
We need your help promoting IWD Banbury. As a first-time event we need to harness your networks to make sure as many people as possible know about it. We know you are busy so feel free to use these sample captions:
